If you snore, wake unrefreshed or experience daytime fatigue, it is important to seek appropriate medical assessment because these symptoms can have several causes. Dentists can play a role in managing diagnosed obstructive sleep apnoea for suitable patients, often in collaboration with a sleep physician.

What Is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a condition where your breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. The most common form, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), occurs when the muscles in your throat relax and block your airway. Symptoms include loud snoring, gasping during sleep, waking with a headache, and feeling exhausted despite a full night's rest.

Dental Devices for Sleep Apnea in Geelong

For some adults with diagnosed obstructive sleep apnoea or primary snoring, a custom mandibular advancement splint may be considered following appropriate assessment. The appliance repositions the lower jaw during sleep to help keep the airway open. It is not suitable for everyone, and CPAP remains an important treatment option for many people.
