One such innovation is our undertaking the process known as biomimetic dentistry.
The word ‘biomimetic’ has its roots in ‘bio’, meaning ‘life’, and ‘mimic’, meaning ‘duplicate’. Biomimetic dentistry is a restorative approach that aims to preserve healthy tooth structure and reproduce aspects of natural tooth form and function. Where appropriate, this can involve removing damaged or weakened structure while retaining as much healthy tooth as practical, then restoring it with adhesive materials such as composite or porcelain.
By imitating, or duplicating the natural structures of your teeth, as well as how it bends and operates, the process helps us provide a natural solution to many concerns you have inside your mouth.
It’s something which regains teeth which have lost their form, structure and colour.
Years of experience and research have shown us that what is ultimately best for a tooth is to restore it as closely to its original properties as we can. There are different ways to go about this, but it often boils down to doing a conservative restoration that involves a combination of approaches and tools.
One example is considering a partial-coverage adhesive restoration instead of a full-coverage crown when the tooth and diagnosis make that appropriate. Digital scanning and milling technology can support this kind of restorative workflow, but the best option depends on the individual tooth and treatment goals.
Biomimetic approaches use adhesive techniques and restorative materials with the aim of preserving healthy tooth structure where practical. The choice of material and technique depends on the tooth, the amount of remaining structure, bite forces and other clinical factors. No restoration can guarantee that a tooth will avoid future treatment.
Anyone who has undergone an invasive oral procedure can understand the anxiety that traditional dentistry can cause. Biomimetic dentistry is a conservative restorative approach that aims to preserve healthy tooth structure where possible. That can mean considering adhesive or partial-coverage restorations instead of removing more tooth structure than necessary. The most appropriate option varies by diagnosis and may still include crowns, root canal treatment or other procedures when clinically indicated.
